Post-Draft Fireside Chat Podcast, Feat. Jason Hanson

>> 5.01.2012

UPDATE: some are struggling with the Ustream embedded Flash. Here’s the direct link to the .mp3.

It's the post-draft Fireside Chat, featuring an interview with legendary Detroit Lions kicker Jason Hanson! Arguably the Lions' greatest second-round pick of all time, Hanson talks about his own draft day experience, and what it's like outlasting everyone but the owner.

Also, we talk draft. Here's part one, before the network drop:

. . . and here's part 2:

Fireside Chat: Detroit Lions vs. Minnesota Vikings

>> 12.12.2011

A minor technical snafu (I didn't press record right away) chopped off the intro and the first minute or so, but here's this week's Fireside Chat. A strange and bizarre-feeling win, but . . . yes, a win. Subscribe (and rate!) via iTunes if you are an iTunesy person like myself.

Fireside Chat Preseason Week 2: Lions at Browns

Thanks to my Internet connection bouncing in the middle of the intro, this week’s Fireside Chat has two parts. Part One:

Fireside Chat: Preseason Week 1, Lions vs. Bengals

>> 8.15.2011

The first Fireside Chat with an actual game to discuss did exactly that: discuss the Bengals game. I hope listening to my headcold-affected voice captures 1/1000th of the joy it was to behold that game.

As always, if you dig it, you can subscribe via iTunes for free, or click the “Podcast” tab up there between the content and the logo.

Fireside Chat: Lions team needs, part I

>> 4.18.2011

The Lions in Winter Fireside Chat, a Detroit Lions podcastSunday night, I did a rundown of the Lions team needs on the defensive side of the ball. Actually, I did the offense too—but I kicked the network cable out of the back of the computer in the middle. so only my cats heard the second part, which I’ll be rerecording.  In the meantime, check out Part I by clicking on the picture above—and hear me say “James Harrison” when I meant “Lawrence Timmons” (H/T @Detroit_Fanatic).

That’s right, the Fireside Chat is back! I’m doing it an hour early, 10:00 pm EDT, so some of the early birds can join in. I’ll be doing Lions draft needs, draft Q&A, and probably some sports-blog meta followup from my Rock Music & The Millionization of Sports Blogs post.  So, join in LIVE on Ustream to participate in the chat!

The Lions in Winter: Fireside Chat; a Detroit Lions Podcast

For those of you who have—or have not—been listening to the Fireside Chat podcast, there’s now a veritable cornucopia of ways to follow it:

  • First, just click the "Podcast" tab on the linkbar beneath the main banner.  It'll take you to a page where the live stream window is permanently embedded—and a couple all-time favorite episodes are highlighted, too.
  • Second, you can go to the Ustream Fireside Chat homepage, which includes all the groovy chat windows, schedule, archives, etc.  This is the best way to follow the show with all the bells and whistles—including interacting with me during the chat.
  • Thirdly, you can open up iTunes, go to “Advanced -> Subscribe to Podcast”, and paste  in the URL for the episodes’ RSS feed:

The Fireside Chat is currently being reviewed by Apple for inclusion in the iTunes store, but that method will subscribe you whether Steve approves of me or not! As for non-podcast content, more is coming soon.  I’ve been burning the midnight oil on the famous CBA post; my hard drive creaks and groans under its mighty weight.

As for news, it looks like we'll know a lot more about how close Louis Delmas is very soon, as he may play against Cleveland--and we'll see if he'll practice Monday.  Calvin Johnson tweaked his ankle today, but it looks like it’s not serious.  However, Jason Fox’s knee may have led to the Lions’ latest roster move: a claim of just-waived Giants OT Cliff Louis.  In Tom Kowalski’s words:

Lions' right tackle position getting interesting

Michael Schottey dug up a nice little scouting report on Cliff Louis from back in ‘07.  Obviously, Louis hasn’t yet hit that upside, but he clearly was on the Lions’ scouts’ radar all this time.  Is IR coming for Jason Fox?  We’ll see . . .

That reminds me of one last multimedia-related note: Michael Schottey was the guest on The Knee Jerks last night!  Three of my favorite Lions writers all talking Lions; great stuff.  Pop on over to The Knee Jerks to check it out.

Fireside Chat: Preseason Week 2

>> 8.23.2010

I finally got a real, live, sort-of microphone setup going for my Fireside Chat podcast--and on Sunday night at 11:00, several folks charitably tuned in to listen and to chat. Save for a minor oversight that put the kibosh on my intro/outro music, and save for a fantastic interview from SI's Tim Layden, this was the best Fireside Chat yet. If you dig The Lions in Winter, and you don't mind a little interactive Lions-related Web 2.0 sports internet talk/chat radio/stream/cast stuff, give it a listen.

If you like it? Check in again next Sunday at 11:00.

Fireside Chat Reminder

>> 8.15.2010

Don’t forget to tune in to tonight’s Fireside Chat.  Up for discussion: the Lions’ rain-addled loss to the Steelers, the loss of Jordon Dizon, and the loss of people’s ignorance about how good Jahvid Best will be.  Don’t forget to pop in the chat room, and chat with me during the podcast!

Fireside Chat #3

Okay, last week I mentioned that I’d be quickening the pace on my, uh, biannual “Fireside Chat” podcast series.  Well, here’s the first one for you—it’s only ten minutes long, is rife with mistakes, and follows a horrific false start.  But on the positive side, there’s a lot of open-ended philosophizing about the hypocritical nature of fans and fandom.

Uh.  I’m sorry, I’m a terrible salesman.  Anyway, give it a listen.  My goal will be to up the quality of both the production and the content every week.  Please, please, please give me feedback of any sort in the comments.  When toe meets leather for Week 1, I want to have this stuff down cold.

Fireside Chats: The Lions in Winter on Ustream

>> 7.28.2010

Last spring, I experimented with a video-podcasting-like-thing, which I termed a "Fireside Chat." I did a modified version of the same format for my phone interview with Matthew Stafford. And Tuesday, I broadcasted (but didn't record) a technical dry run for my soon-to-be-weekly Ustream show. I'm afraid only those who were paying RAPT attention to my Twitter feed, @lionsinwinter, got to hear it (probably for the best).

Wait, what? Yes, you read right, The Lions in Winter: Fireside Chat will be coming to you on Ustream every week from here through the rest of the season. The current plan is that I'll broadcast every night there's a game, and you folks will be encouraged to jump in on the "social stream" to keep it lively. Thanks to an unfortunate encounter involving my video camera and the laundry, it'll be audio-only at first; with your help it should be no less entertaining.
