Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew addressed several topics in an interview today, including the fact that the acquisition of Pro Bowl linebacker Julian Peterson does not change the team's draft plans concerning Wake Forest linebacker Aaron Curry. In college, Curry played the strong side but Mayhew said that if the Lions draft Curry, he would be the team's starting middle linebacker "from day one.''Maybe it's not the most likely scenario out there, but I still say we need this kid to be the heart of our defense.

In regards to Curry, his agent sure has him acting the part, and saying the right things to become a future franchise leader on defense.
I am torn on selecting Curry, though. Peterson is a short-term player, obviously. That being said, the Lions will have A LOT of money devoted to that personnel group upon selecting Curry. He would have to start and produce immediately.
The Lions seem to have bad timing for selecting LB's. During recent years we have watched players like Derrick Johnson, Jerod Mayo, and Parick Willis join other organizations and flourish. It would be enticing to add a player of that caliber and productivity.
All I know, the next month, will be incredibly interesting, until the Lions ink the contract with the player they are likely to select with 1.1.
I don't get the argument that we'll have "too much money" locked up in the linebacker spot if we draft Curry--so we should draft an OT 1.1 when we already have two very highly paid OTs. The contract is going to be a capbuster no matter who we pick; it's what we were discussing earlier. So, why not make that titanic investment in the best player, the best PERSON available in the draft?
Oh, and yes; my heart aches for Patrick Willis.

I am not denying Curry as an option, but you watch, Ernie Sims is an average season away from being traded or cut, or being asked to re-structure, if they draft Curry. I'm just saying...
I do not think this team will be deep enough at LB next season to get rid of Sims, average or no. Right now he is one of two linebackers on the roster that can even pretend to be average, and the other wasn't on the roster five days ago. Unless Dizon shows up to this year's training camp four inches taller, twenty pounds heavier, and glowing green with rage, I don't see us running out of room for a player of Sims' talent and passion even if Curry's the pick.
You are right, though, that Sims is in major danger of freelancing himself into irrelevancy.
