Lions vs. Jets Gameday Post: A New Beginning

Today, I take my four-year-old son to his first Lions game. He’s been talking about it for weeks, and he’s been talking about it nonstop for days. He’s been waking up every morning hoping it’s Sunday, and bitterly disappointed every morning except this one. He’s all decked out in gear, as we all are, and he’s bouncing off the walls with excitement. I even had to talk him out of wearing his cleats!
He’s nowhere near as excited as I am.
This is an enormous game for us as fans, but it’s also a game of incredible import to the franchise. For the first time in years, the Lions are going to have a crack at a legitimate Super Bowl contender—and a legitimate chance to win. Depending on who you ask, the Jets are favored by something more than a field goal but less than a touchdown. I’m not the only person to pick the Lions to win, either—Sterling Sharpe on NFL Network’s NFL Playbook did the same.
If the Lions win, it'll be their biggest in years . . . maybe since before Millen. If they lose, it’ll break my little boy’s heart, no matter how hard I prepare him for it. Either way, today will be a landmark in franchise history, a day when we find out exactly how far the Lions have come.

You should be glad your at the game today Ty, you would think Gus Johnson and Steve Tasker were on the Jets payroll, their bias was as disgusting as the ten years we had under Millen.
Stafford done for the year, injury to Hanson, Peterson penalty, Santonio Holmes, Nick Folk, this season is over.
We're already writing off Stafford for the year? That seems at least 18 hours premature.
I can't believe I'm quoting John L. Smith but "the players are playing their butts off and the coaches are screwing it up!" WTF is with the Schwartz asking his practice squad QB to throw the ball when all he needs to do is let the clock run? Ty, I feel bad for Little Man, but I guess he might as well see what its really like to care about the Lions right from the jump. They killed me one-week-at-a-time for about 30 years. For the last 15 its just something to shake one's head and smile about. My his D-troit fever break at a young age!

Yeah, *I* am not doing that. He needs to get on the field as much as possible, even if it's just the last two weeks. Plus, last year's Lions were just marking time--these Lions are competing and winning.

I haven't seen the full, direct quote yet, but from what I'm hearing Schwartz implied that the play call was a run, with an option to check into a throw--and Stanton should NOT have exercised his choice to throw.

I'm starting to relax again, after yesterdays trials. I think the majority of the anger, and hate/speak is coming from those fans that I believe just jumped on the bandwagon last week.
The call everyone is up in arms about, doesn't create the loss. It merely made it easier, while attempting to salvage the win. I like the call, hated the execution. Worst case scenario you should've had our best running QB in a boot situation. Sounds great just don't throw unless you see something out of this world.
Questions abound about Staffords Future/toughness/etc. But the team we do have still looks significantly better than what I've been watching for the last 5 years. We still need to find our run game. whether that be a more powerful back to pair with Best, or improvements to the line so we can run between the tackles. And defensively we need more play makers off the line of scrimmage. Lets face it no matter how good your front 4 is they can be blocked by 6-7 in most situations regularly. But with all that said, we still have a good chance of being in the 5-6 win area that everyone excpected at the begining of the year. Changing Expectations is a bad habit, because Here now they've failed in something that few would've expected 8 weeks ago.

Yes I am writing Stafford off for the year and here is why:
1. Does anyone think that tackle on the 10 - 15 yard line from behind is when he hurt his shoulder? - I don't.
2. Does anyone think that if Hill was healthy he would have been on the bench? - I don't
3. Does anyone really believe Staff's shoulder was 100% yesterday prior to game-time? - I don't.
Unfortunately I feel Stafford was less than 100% yesterday, he was probably in the upper 80's but not close to 100%. If anyone saw him earlier in the game prior to the tackle he did alot of grimacing after throwing the ball, and alot of arm circles that leads me to believe something wasn't right.
Prior to the "tackle" and subsequent injury he had pressure on him ( can't remember what quarter. ) and was rushed by Bart Scott, Stafford got the ball away but Scott pushed him and Stafford fell backwards and landed on his back. Scott pushed on the right side of Stafford, nothing hard but enough to knock him down as he was backpedaling anyhow and when Staff got up his face told the whole story. The grimace on his face told me he should have been done for the day, because if your shoulder was hurting after that minimal contact it wasn't right in the first place. This is where it all started to go wrong.
As far as Stafford being done for the year if he has any chance of being a healthy QB in this league he needs to sit the rest of this season out, re-hab, surgery, whatever and get right for next year. Because if this happens again, and regrettably I think it will, what we have is a 40 million dollar Charles Rogers on our hands.
P.S. Ty, the person I feel bad for is your son, what a great day it could have been.
