the lions congregation: week six
>> 4.03.2009
It's that time again over at the Church of Schwartz. The clergymen over there have submitted three more questions to the flock:
* If Matthew Stafford is our pick at 1.1, how many games does Daunte Culpepper start next season?
* If Jason Smith/Eugene Monroe is the pick at 1.1, where does Jeff Backus play next year?
* If you could bring back any former Lion (not named Barry Sanders) to be a part of this team, who and why?
I think the third question, and the answers to it, have been my favorite so far of the series. Anyone reading this site who doesn't go scope this piece is missing out!

If its Stafford, thye very well should play Culpepper, UNTIL he gets hurt, UNTIL we get an OL, or UNTIL Linehan thinks he's ready.
Backus? could play whereever as far as I am concerned. I think Loper is a contender, and he has played all 4 lineman spots(Minus Center). I also believe Backus could be a LG, or RG, or RT, preferably RG, or LG. Leaving Cherilus as our RT, and Peterman is locked in with his contract. BUT, I could care less about Backus, another hometown pick by Milen that failed(Stanton, Rogers, Backus, to name a few).
CB Lem Barney, or Al Baker DE, or Joe Schmidt LB

You know, Neal, I would theoretically agree . . . let him sit for as long as possible while Culpepper takes the licks. But, you know what? Screw that. If you're chaining the franchise to Matt Stafford, go all the way. Call him the Day One starter, let him hold up that brand-new jersey on draft day, and make him the King of Detroit . . . until August at least. What's the worst that could happen? He might lead us to 0-16 . . .?
Peace
Ty
Let him learn on the job. Carrying a clipboard will just make it so that when he does finally start, he'll have that much longer to go before he's ready to be good. Might as well get it out of the way sooner rather than later. This season isn't going to be a winner no matter what you do. I'd rather they let Stafford take his lumps and come back next year with a year of hardened experience rather than a year of clipboard carrying experience.
I don't necessarily buy the whole argument that his growth as a player could be somehow messed up, or that if he is shaken up due to too much abuse as a rookie that he might never be the same, etc. If he's really the guy, then he needs to have the mental makeup to survive that sort of thing. If he crumbles, then chances are that he wasn't going to be the man no matter what.
All that of course assumes that the Lions will take Stafford. I'm uneasy on Stafford. Under 60% completion percentage in college usually doesn't translate into good things in the NFL. Hellllloooooo Joey Harrington. And he never really had that dominant game in college where he won the game for his team by himself. He's got the measurables, but then again so did Jeff George. On the other hand, I thought that Matt Ryan would be a bust and that's looking pretty good for the Falcons so far, so what do I know? And there's a guy named Peyton Manning who had the same "Never won a big one" tag on him coming out of college. So, again, what the hell do I know?
Man, this is turning into a blog post all it's own, so I'll just stop now and say when it comes to Stafford, I think Ty and I are on the same page.
Ty, I think you guys are missing one possible scenario...
Stafford stays on the roster as #3.
Stanton comes in after a bad start or 'Pepper injury and plays lights out.
Detroit trades Stanton next January for a first and a third like the Browns should have when everyone thought Anderson might actually be a starter.
Im sorry. I am the biggest MSU homer, and State of Michigan Homer, but Stanton will never be an NFL QB, and never get traded for much other than a 5th rounder if their Lucky!
Millen insisted on this kid( as he did with the other homers-Backus, Rogers, etc), and Martz wanted NO part of it, but Millen did what he always did; Whatever hsi pee brain thought was a good idea. Drafting Brian Calhoun cause some intern in the back yells out draft Calhoun he seemed good?
