Detroit Lions Jersey Menagerie: Post yours!

>> 7.07.2010

Authentic Matthew Stafford home Detroit Lions jersey Around this time last year, in the football dog days of summer, I threw down the gauntlet: I purchased an authentic Matthew Stafford jersey.  After all the wailing and lamentation, after all the doom and gloom, after the fearful, exhaustive analysis I did in anticipation of Stafford’s selection, I literally “bought in” to him, Schwartz, Mayhew, and the totality of the New Lions.  I said at the time:

As the Flamekeeper, the torchbearer, the self-appointed philosopher king of all true diehard Lions fans, I knew there was only one player I could in good conscience come bearing the livery of: Matthew Stafford. As much as I like Megatron, Kevin Smith, Julian Peterson, Cliff Avril, all those guys, Stafford is the franchise. He’s the quarterback, the field general, the spokesman, and the lynchpin of the entire organization.

Sure, there are a lot of naysayers, a lot of doubters, and a lot of obstacles to his success. But forget that. I’m throwing down the gauntlet. I’m investing my fandom—and my hard-earned jack--in this wunderkind. I said before the draft that if he’s the pick, we fans have got to support him the way we never supported Joey—and I’m not only going to support him, I’m picking up the banner and running. I hope that people see me, hand-in-hand with my wife and three kids, rocking the authentic Stafford, and think, “Wow, that guy must really believe.” And, maybe, possibly, then think “maybe I should, too.”

When Joanna Hunter, of the NFL’s PR department, Tweeted that Ndamukong Suh was #8 in jersey sales since April 1st, I idly thought that was pretty cool.  Then it occurred to me: when was the last time a Lion, any Lion, cracked the top ten in jersey sales?  I asked Ms. Hunter, and she duly answered: save for a brief period heading in to Calvin Johnson’s rookie year, she couldn’t find a Lion in the top ten at any point in her records (which go back to 2001).

This little bit of info is a big blue spark.  Ndamukong Suh is on track to become the game-changing, tempo-setting, franchise-rejuvenating defensive player I’d wailed and lamented over in the runup to Stafford’s selection—moreover, fans who are not me are now buying in, figuratively and literally.  I’d worried the 2-win record, the injury-interrupted rookie campaign from Stafford, and the worthless, sucking, Culpeppery void that was the last few games of the year had driven the casual fan off until the losing spell was broken yet this fall.  Instead, Suh alone has been enough to get fans to open their hearts and wallets.

To this end, I’d like to see how you folks are repping your favorite Lions—past, present, and future.  Blogger doesn’t allow images to be placed directly in comments, but a text description, and/or a link to a picture, will suffice nicely.  Home, away, new, old, replica, authentic, throwback . . . post ‘em up!  I’m really looking forward to what you folks have got.

I have a home replica Barry, a home throwback replica Spielman and my newest as a Bday present from my boss a home replica Suh. I have a NFL.com gift certificate and am trying to talk myself into an away Staff or CJ.
Is the authentic worth the higher price tag over the "replithentic"?

Ty Schalter July 8, 2010 at 10:25 AM

For general wear, probably not. The repthentic, or what I think they currently call the "Premier Series", looks 99% like the real thing, especially from father than five feet away, for about 60% of the cost.

Up close, there's a big difference in the quality of the numbers, and a difference in the cut/type of fabric. The sleeves are also a big difference . . . With the authentic, you either have to go oversized so that the sleeves hang like a replica's (like a tee shirt), or you have to get the actual size you'd actually wear if it were your jersey, so the sleeves poof out to accomodate shoulder pads that aren't there. I rolled with the former choice, though I've lost about 15 pounds since I bought it and wish I'd gone one size smaller.

I got a Megatron replica, but I am a fan of jersey-shirts. I got a Delmas and Stafford one of those. Between all my teams I probably have 10 jersey shirts. Nice job sportin the Staff. I didn't have the guts to buy one last summer.

No jerseys but I do have a nice autographed Stafford picture hanging in my living room... right next to the Barry Sanders autograph I got years ago.

I only own two jerseys, Barry & Steve Yzerman.

The Barry jersey is a very high quality Reebok with stitched name and numbers and double fabric around the neck & shoulders. Don't know if that makes it an authentic or a replica, but based on the quality, I'd guess authentic.

The Yzerman Jersey is also very high quality, but it's a Koho.

And while it's not a jersey, I have to mention how I acquired my favorite piece of memorabilia. The piece is two autographed 8x10 photos, with a team logo medallion, a team championship medallion, a championship trophy logo medallion and a title medallion, all matted within a 22"x27" frame. The title medallion says;

"Captians of Glory"
Autographed by
Ted Lindsay and Steve Yzerman

The photos are; a black & white of Lindsay kissing the Stanley Cup (can't tell which year) and a color of Steve holding the Cup over his head, just after receiving it from Bettman after winning the 2002 finals.

How did I acquired such an incredible piece? At a silent auction for charity here in Denver, of all places! I won the silent auction with a bid of $70, but gave the charity a full $100 - knowing full well the same piece would go for three or four times that amount if the auction were held in Michigan.

$275 for a authentic Lions jersey? check out the China outfits online. bestjerseymall.com purchase four home Stafford jerseys $152 including shipping. Nice heavy material with sewn name & number, NFL shield on jersey a tad off, but much like the authentic for a fraction of the cost. Now about Stafford he's the golden boy, rock star, man to lead us to muliple super bowl, heck I name my fanasty team The Stafford Wives.

I always had a hard time committing to a Lions jersey. Who to get? was always the question. I was never sure any player worth having would stick around long enough to warrant a jersey purchase.
Last year though was my first year as a season ticket holder. I kept rocking the t-shirts, I even had a Jason Hanson jersey t-shirt. But me and a friend went down to Cincinnati for the Lions game last year and I figured it was time. I found an authentic home Calvin jersey that was half off. It was a jersey from the year before though so it didn't have the new lettering. Which is fine because I am still not sure about the new ones.
I was thinking of getting an away Suh for this year.

Reverend Spielman,  July 9, 2010 at 11:53 AM

I've got a plethora of old, awful jerseys.

Anyone from the likes of Germaine Crowell, Jon Shitna, Kenoy Kennedy, Mike Williams and Joey Harrington can be found hanging from my basement walls, never to see the light of day again.

As for the actual respectable jerseys, that total stands only at 2 Calvin Johnson jerseys, a few Barry jerseys and my own personalized "Little" #5 jersey. Those are the only ones I'm not ashamed to take out of the house.

Scotty G July 9, 2010 at 12:45 PM

Kris, where do you live and when are you going on vacation???
Rev. Spiel, if I was a rich man, I would buy a replica jersey, you know the ones with the ray lewis commercial were you can get any name on any jersey, and buy one that says shitna on it and go heckle him at cowboy games:)

Ty Schalter July 9, 2010 at 5:04 PM

Weston--

Yeah, I waffle on the shirseys. Part of the mystique of wearing a player's jersey is, you know, making the investment. You buy a full authentic, you'd better BELIEVE, you know? A shirsey lets you express "Hey I like this guy" without breaking the bank, but it's also fleeting--as you say, you can stockpile them without fear of getting burned.

Pros and cons . . . but I've always felt like if it's worth doing, it's worth going overboard on!

Peace

LionNYC,  July 10, 2010 at 11:12 AM

I went out on a limb and picked up a Pettigrew home replica jersey at the beginning of last season. It was a shame he got injured, but I still think (hope) he comes back and plays at the level he was beginning to show us. There is no doubt I was the only one in NYC repping the Lions in such a jersey. I have seen some throwback Barry jerseys and few CJ ones, but Lions fans are few and far between in the city. I will say when you rep the Lions, true sports fans respect that loyalty. I wonder what it would be like if and when we start winning and people begin to jump on the bandwagon. In some sad way it's kind of nice belonging to such a select fraternity as a die hard Lions fan.

Since we're playing the Giants this year, I was considering getting a Delmas, Best or Follett (if he is a starting LB) jersey to rock at the Meadowlands; unless Pettigrew comes back strong by late September.

I've also considered getting an away jersey, but isn't it kind of difficult to tell from a distance what team you support?

Matt,  July 10, 2010 at 11:45 AM

I've got you all beat in the pathetic jersey category. Try a home replica Charles Rogers. The last time I wore it, probably the last time I'll ever wear it, was for Halloween two years ago with a hobo sign that read "I NEED MONEY." Sadly, it is my only current Lions jersey. A custom #81 "Megatron" or #90 "Boy Named Suh" are in the foreseeable future, though.

I also have the coolest Red Wings jersey ever, IMO. Authentic Vladimir Konstantinov.

Unknown July 10, 2010 at 8:48 PM

When I get my degree and start making big boy dollars I'll have to start a jersey collection. For now I'll stick with my Megatron and jersey shirts.

From my youth I have Batch, James Stewart, and Joey, of course. For a party once I took the Harrington jersey and taped over paper to write Garcia and put a number 5 on the front. That was the OT loss to the Bears, so that idea lasted 1 week.

@matt
Nice Konstantinov. I've checked ebay and no luck.

I ordered an authentic Stafford jersey a couple weeks prior to last season. nflshop had em for about 120... turned out to be the lettering and style from 08-09. classic Lions logo too!
However since Stafford never wore this style it looks like I ordered the jersey before anyone knew he,d be a Lion.
Anyone else make a similar purchase? I bet that's why they were half-off. I dont recall if the pictures indicated the new style or not, but I'm pleased.

@Ty in WI

Good luck on the Konstantinov. I've never seen another one. I WOULD kill a man if I could get mine signed by the man himself. ;-)

Weird on the Stafford. I'm thinking they probably had a bunch of old logo "customizeable" blanks they were looking to clear out at half off and it didn't matter what name you put on it. Cool, though, 'cause that's certainly a one-of-a-kind. And I'll bet Stafford wears the old logo on a Thanksgiving Day in the not-too-distant future.

WOW! That's an great story, and an incredible get. Wow. Well done! I think your "three or four times" estimate might be conservative, too.

CJ81TD--

So your "home Barry" is in the late 90s style? And the "throwback" Spielman is a 40s throwback?

Mick--

For what it's worth, I didn't pay anywhere near $275. Try looking around at local shops.

I stay away from the Chinese stuff, partly because I worry about supporting sweatshops. Any time you can get a passable copy of a multi-hundred-dollar garment for $50, you can bet they weren't paying their labor more than pennies an hour.

I don't deny there's a ridiculous markup on this stuff, but I'd rather downgrade to the repthentic or replica than rock an 'authentic' put together by an eight-year-old, you know?

Peace

Glad to see you put as much thought into it as I do--it makes me feel less crazy. Congrats on the season tix!
